Working Hard, or Hardly Working?

I've got one test left of my first semester of graduate school. I want it over, but I find it hard to motivate myself to study when my wife is in the other room watching one of her Doris Day movies that she loves so much. But, economics is a pretty interesting subject and if I want to do social policy analysis, I'm going to need to have a pretty good understanding of economic theory. I've thus far rejected offers of studying with other people, smart people, on the basis that I don't want to leave my house when it's below 15 degrees out. Eight seems significantly cold to stay inside. Perhaps I've beaten this to death, but I'm from the south. We're a people unused to the extreme cold. A hot summer, that we can handle. I spent the hottest week in the history of Austin with a broken airconditioner. That was the summer where everyday we set a new record for the hottest day ever in Austin, ending with a high of 117. But, eight degrees is entirely too damn cold.

Aging With Grace

I think that you become truly an adult when you receive your first holiday newsletter from a friend. Today, I became an adult. Thank you Kevin.

Don't call it a comeback

As is my custom, I am foregoing shaving for the duration of finals. The question posed to my readership is should I return to the days of the "Over the Top" mustache, or should I just shave it all off on Tuesday morning? Please, vote in comments. If nobody votes in comments, I will watch "Over the Top" and my decision will based on if the guy whom I modeled my mustache after can finally manage to beat Sly. If he miraculously wins, the mustache will stay.

Why do you hate me, Wendy Burger

Today marks the first time in five or six months that I have eaten at a fast food restaurant. I ate at Wendy's. It turns out that my body doesn't much care for Wendy's. I suppose I should be pleased that my body demands better than fast food. Too bad that aren't any good, healthy restaurants in Madison.

The dark side of Brendon

It turns out that there is a blog called Brendon's Spider Hole featuring a young republican from Washington State University. It always seems that young republicans are creepier than republicans on the whole as they tend to be young true believers. I don't usually like young democrats either as they tend to be all emotion and no rationality. Whatever.

I don't want to imply that I think that this guy is in any way creepy. He may be a sweet little angel. I just feel that he's entirely too young to be conservative.

Snubbed

Well, apparently the Capital Times doesn't care about La Follette students using blogs as their article today focuse almost exclusively on the use of blogs by law students and law professors.

Globalrific

I'm currently working on a paper about the American social welfare policy implications of globalization. What I think is funny, is that while doing this I'm drinking English tea, grown in India, out of a cup from the Scottish Parliament. My favorite beers are Belhaven and Bass, both of the UK. My favorite food is authentic Mexican cuisine. I enjoy watching French movies, okay Audrey Tautou movies, with my wife. What is interesting is that we only think of economic globalization. We tend to disregard the exportation and importation of culture and ideas. Well, anti-globalization people do tend to focus on the American take-over in the world of culture, but they are as wrong about that as they are everything else. The point is, we are influenced here. What is so powerful about American culture is that we have managed to incorporate so many different cultures into one greater culture. That's all.

Mark, Ryan, Word, et al.

So, I'm going to be in Austin in about four weeks. If people don't respond to my emails, especially the guy taking one class who spends all of his time with my sister-in-law, then maybe I just won't call you when I'm in town. What do you think about that? Yeah, get in on it.

UPDATE: The titel of this post should now simply be RYAN

Mundane

I used an ice scraper on my car today for the first time in about 7 years. That was strange.
