Grey's Anatomy

I'm watching an entire episode of Grey's Anatomy and it seems like a slower, less interesting, version of Scrubs. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I don't think so.

Erin, make ABC shows original, as opposed to cheap NBC rip-offs. Hell, NBC already rips NBC off plenty.

Bob's Big Day

So far today I've listened to the new Yo La Tengo album, "I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass," to the Shout Out Louds, to the Bedroom Walls, to the Gl*xo Babies, and to Billy Nichols. I've read a bit of the new Chuck Klosterman book. I also watched a little bit of Scrubs on Comedy Central.

Mrs. LaBlog interviewed for a job at her current employer with a women who not only graduated from the same school as my lovely wife, but who actually lived in the same door room as my wife. That is a crazy coincidence.

Here's Why Not Kinky

I'm really not sure how Kinky Friedman is getting so much support from progressives in Texas. Everywhere around Austin there are "Why Not Kinky" bumper stickers. When did banning abortion, copying Israeli immigration policy, and requiring prayer in schools, become liberal ideals? How can a man who seems to have no qualifications, no competence, and no good ideas, become a viable candidate for liberal Texans? It reminds me of Jimmy James running for President on Newsradio. So I have to ask, is Kinky running for Governor to meet women?

Update: I want to add that, as of right now, I'm not enthusiastically supporting anyone in this race. I'm sure I'll end up voting for Chris Bell, but he's not so exciting. That said, I believe Kinky is clearly the least desirable of the four candidates, comfortably behind Perry.

Chris Owens

In my time in Austin I have had the opportunity to meet or interact with the occassional UT athlete. Some of them were nice(Chris Simms, D.D. Lewis, Marcus Tubbs) and some of them were really immature (Major Applewhite), but Chris Owens was by far the most pleasant guy I had to deal with. It's not a stretch to say that in my few years as a sandwich maker, he was my favorite customer, other than the cocktail waitress who bought me presents. He was an incredible basketball player at UT and set for great things when he got hurt in the middle of his senior season. He struggled to catch on in the NBA and now he's playing in Europe. There's a nice article about him in the Washington Post.

You know, stuff

I hate applying for jobs, or more precisely, I hate turning in applications. The moment that small stack of papers leave my possession and go to some agency that may or may not choose to employ me, I lose my control of the process. I can perfectly control what goes on that paper, but I can't control how they interpret it. It drives me nuts.

Apparently you have to pay for things like housing and electricity. Why didn't anybody bother to tell me that.

Why is my financial advisor not licensed to practice in my state. It seems like I should be shopping for a replacement.

I'm out of shape and my major exercise is walking to the grocery store. That's no so good.

I've been wanting the Greenbush lately. If you live in Madison, go there.

God loves you, Madison people

On October 17, Eef Barzelay of Clem Snide will be putting on a show at the High Noon Saloon. I've seen him many times, both solo and with the band, and every time has been a really great show. I urge you to check it out.

The Last Kiss

We went tonight to see the movie that forced me to go to work through the side door and to keep my blinds closed for a day. This movie was very uncomfortable for me to sit through. The Jacinda/Zach couple reminded me too much of Mrs. LaBlog and me, up until the point when he decided to take a college girls phone number and then go on a date with her. From that point on it ceased to remind me of us. But it was uncomfortable in an almost real way. I couldn't imagine a guy fucking things up the badly when things seemed so good. But, I guess people do stupid stuff in relationships.

On a totally unrelated note, a Westlake High School student who has committed to play football for the University of Texas next year collapsed on the sideline tonight and had to be revived with a defibrilator. He's currently doing okay and in a hospital in Bryan.

College Football is crazy

I watched West Virginia do their normal early lead followed by a serious let-down tonight. They ended up winning by 21 points, but they were up 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. They didn't let Maryland back in the game by playing conservatively, they let them back in the game by losing focus and committing stupid penalties. I still think that Louisville, even without Bush, will win the Big East. However, Steve Slaton is incredible.

I wonder what will come of the newest stories about Reggie Bush receiving illegal benefits. His agent admits to giving the Bush family large sums of money, although he said that they were loans. That's a big no-no in NCAA land. Southern Cal, and yes I've heard that they hate to be called this, may be about to get some more unwanted attention. I hope none of their players cry about this.

ESPN had a question of the day that was,"What is the best college football team this year?" and the options were Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, Auburn, and West Virginia. There are currently 22 undefeated teams in the Associated Press Top 25. Sixth-ranked LSU plays fourth-ranked Auburn on Saturday. I don't understand the need to try and figure this crap out three weeks into the season. It's a twelve game regular season and three conferences have a championship game. We've got time to figure out who the best is.

Oops

This is my horribly neglected blog. It's not even neglected because I've been busy. It's neglected because I've been lazy.

I had a birthday last week. I'm now 28. Relative to my other ages, that's very old.

I'm considering writing an analysis of the costs to society of tax exemptions for non-profits, specifically property tax losses from churches. I live next to a mid-city monster and it drives me crazy.

I saw two of my favorite people today and sent them both on their way. One is back in Houston and the other is in Los Angeles.

Ann Richards died of cancer at the age of 73. Like her or not, that's a big loss. Texas needs more people like her. I expect to see Strayhorn try and channel Richards' persona in the near future. I doubt it will work for her.

I still want a job although I'm considering using the lottery as an alternate income generating strategy.

Texas lost to Ohio State. They didn't look nearly as bad as some have implied. They were outplayed by a better team. Texas will be very good this year.

My brain is freaking out. I think it's due to this giant cookie cake that Mrs. LaBlog got for me.

Apparently Mrs. LaBlog's brief tenure as a substitute teacher is over. It's a shame.

I will have a post about the value of local business soon.

My Cost-Benefit Analysis professor, David Weimer, received a $120,000 MacArthur grant.

Update: I edited for spelling per Nick's comment.
