Campaign season is here

I got some campaign material today for the upcoming La Follette School Student Association elections. I have never been particularly active in student government and to a degree that's what this seems like to me. They plan things that are of more significance to the students in the school than would the student government at your typical University. What strikes me as odd is that it was material for four people running as a ticket. And, the Gulf War vet/Guy from the Russ Feingold ads isn't even running for president. I was pleased that some of what was in the email and attached document were ideas that I had discussed with Jiggy who then passed them back on to me and my classmates. That's always fun. I'm not sure what the purpose of running for student government as a party is when only about fifty people are voting. I suppose that's why I never agreed to run on the ticket. Now, if Brenda were to run on a ticket then I might have to get in on that Brend action. As it stands, I haven't been nominated, that I know of, and I don't plan on nominating myself. I'm dedicated to another year of standing on the sidelines.

Perfection

I don't mean to brag, but the black beans that I made last night were the best black beans that I have ever had in my life. I add a whole pasilla, guajillo, or ancho, to the cooking beans. Usually, one pepper is good for half a pound of beans. It seems uncommon to add the pepper to the beans like that, but it makes them taste very nice. Also, cooking them in the crockpot is really nice. They come out really well with the slow cooking. Two hours on high, and then four to six hours on low. I like to add a bit of salt, oregano, garlic powder, chili powder, onion flakes and a touch of lime. There's a good Stubb's meat rub that is chili lime that makes a nice touch. There, I'm giving away the whole of my recipe. I guess not the specific measurements though. The beans served as a nice side dish for some ground turkey tacos. Cook ground turkey in a combination of pineapple juice, rum, and lime juice. Heat up some corn tortillas and top with diced onion and cilantro. Add a little fresh key lime juice and you've got a nice meal.

That's all for my cooking installment today.

UPDATE: Actually, I do mean to brag.

It's a miracle

Starting Monday, it's supposed to be in the 50's for six or seven days. That's what heaven is all about folks. On another note, my sister-in-law like the spice, I mean, Curry is in town for a few days. It makes sense to leave Austin in the spring to head up to Wisconsin. All that nice weather can be too much. She's just going to miss our nice stretch. Sucker. I'm using my crockpot today. I'm making black beans while my wife and her sibling our seeing what Madison has to offer. I'm told that I'm going to the zoo with them. The zoo is free and about three blocks from my home.

I wish I remember what I wrote down

It seems that the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities has deemed my application worthy of making it past the preliminary rounds. Now I may have to do a phone interview with some division's internship supervisor. I'm not sure which divisions I prioritized, and beyond that, I'm not sure that a phone interview suits me terribly well. While I think that I don't translate well on paper, I have no idea how I translate over the phone. In person, I'm pretty confident that things will go okay. I make eye contact and I listen. It usually works for me. Anyway, this represents a step closer to DC for the summer. My best good friend and his wife will be there for part of the summer, so that would be nice to live in the same place. It's no fun only seeing my best friend every four or five months, if that.

More on facial hair

Hopefully, if you've read this blog before, you are aware that I am growing a mustache for a make-a-wish foundation fundraiser. Well, it's been nearly two weeks and I'm still growing. The strange thing is that I haven't shaved the rest of my face in the past three days and it's already catching up to my mustache. I'm not sure what to make of this. I find it odd that my mustache consists of much more blonde and red hair than does the rest of my face. Anyway, please give generously.

My water tastes like Jello

I'm at work and they had some Fruit2O left over. It very strongly resembles jello. There are also cookies and other treats left from some prospective sociology students. Sociology students are people who think that Psychology is too hard of a science. Psychology students are people who are either undecided or wish they were real scientists. That, or they realized that there's no money in philosophy.

Do you hate kids or something?

Well, thanks to Kevin C for bringing attention to the fundraiser in which I am participating. It is for a good cause, so I hope that you'll consider helping me out.
